Problem:
Special education kids aren't involved with regular
education peers. It is difficult to get good social time with peers during
school. It is also hard for traditional education kids to understand the
struggles of special education kids. This can lead kids to misunderstanding the
choices and actions of special education kids, which can cause bullying of
students. It is also hard for traditional education kids to accept different
types of people, therefore leading to more bullying.
Facts-
Children with ADHD are more likely to be bullied by peers than other students (Unnever & Cornell, 2003)
Only 10 U.S. studies have been conducted on the connection between bullying and developmental disabilities but all of these studies found that children with disabilities were two to three times more likely to be bullied than their non disabled peers (The Bully Project, 2012)
Studies show that 60% of students with disabilities report being bullied regularly. (The Bully Project, 2012)
Plan:
If we had the money and resources we would create clubs to
involve special education kids and their peers.
The regular education kids would get the chance to use homeroom, study
hall, and lunch to hang out with special education kids. We would try to target
middle and high school students who are part of cliques. We would try to put
this program into schools that have exclusive social groups. We have the hopes that
it would eliminate or downsize the number of those groups. We would hope that
the club would be able to set up fundraisers and activities for the club.
Conclusion:
These clubs would allow the special education teens
to improve their social skills. The traditional education kids would get the
chance to help out, as well as learning to accept and appreciate others. This could
bring up some problems though. Things such as money or close-minded people
could cause the club to fail. Also we have to take in to account that special education
kids are at a different level than their peers, so the activities would have to
be more simple or easier. This might cause regular education kids to become
bored. Although a lot of good could come from this like it would create good
social skills, more diversity, and you can gain friends. We also hope that this
would help eliminate exclusive social groups.
